Zero Waste Home – Bea Johnson

This book was one of my first inspirations for intentional living and minimalism. Although it’s centered around reducing waste, it beautifully goes beyond that – inspiring a simpler, calmer, and more conscious way of life that also alignes beautifully with The Vital 5.

Zero Waste Home by Bea Johnson was one of the first books that truly inspired me to think differently about minimalism, consumption, and intentional living. At first, I picked it up because of its focus on reducing waste and living more sustainably. But what stayed with me long after reading it was that the book is about so much more than just trash or recycling. Beneath the practical zero-waste methods is a deeper invitation to simplify life, become more conscious of daily habits, and focus on what truly adds value and meaning. Reading this book sparked many of my first reflections around intentionality: How we shop, what we keep, what we consume, and how much mental and physical clutter we carry without even realizing it. It helped me see that living with less can actually create more: more clarity, calm, freedom, and appreciation for everyday life. What I appreciate most about Bea Johnson’s approach is that it feels practical and inspiring rather than extreme. The book offers many simple ideas and mindset shifts that can be applied gradually and naturally in everyday life. Even now - 10 years after initial reading - I still find myself returning to this book from time to time. To revisit certain ideas, look something up again, or simply reconnect with its grounding philosophy. For me, it became one of those timeless books that continues to inspire new perspectives at different stages of life. If you are drawn to minimalism, wellness, conscious living, sustainability, or simply creating a more intentional lifestyle, this is a book I genuinely recommend exploring. Not as a guide to perfection, but as an inspiring starting point for living a little lighter and more mindfully.
